It is a teaching hospital. The Johns Hopkins Hospital, located in Baltimore, was founded in 1889 and is the teaching hospital for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Johns Hopkins Health System was created in 1986, and 10 years later, it joined with the medical school to create Johns Hopkins Medicine. Among Hopkins’ research institutes are those dedicated to studying brain science, cell engineering, diabetes and genetic medicine. Hopkins can lay claim to a number of medical firsts, such as developing renal dialysis, isolating and crystallizing insulin and inventing the rechargeable, implantable pacemaker.
