New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell in New York, N.Y. is ranked No. 10 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. It is nationally ranked in 14 adult and 10 pediatric specialties and rated high performing in 2 adult specialties and 7 procedures and conditions. It is a general medical and surgical facility. It is a teaching hospital. New York-Presbyterian Hospitals was founded in 1998 after a merger between The New York Hospital and The Presbyterian Hospital, which were founded in 1771 and 1868, respectively. In collaboration with the Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. George Papanicolaou of The New York Hospital created the Pap smear test to screen women for cervical cancer. The Presbyterian Hospital also has historic milestones: It was the first to perform pediatric heart transplant surgery in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center.
To this day, New York-Presbyterian Hospitals work in tandem with two Ivy League medical schools: Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This helps the hospital network stay up on the latest medical education and research, as well as advance patient-centered clinical care. The four major divisions of New York-Presbyterian are the aforementioned hospital, New York-Presbyterian Regional Hospital Network, New York-Presbyterian Physician Services, and New York-Presbyterian Community and Population Health. This academic medical center is composed of seven campuses with 10 hospital locations.
Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is available at the GI Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery center at NYP/Weill Cornell Medicine, which specializes in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. This procedure results in less pain, a quicker recovery time and less of a risk of complications. The Bariatric Surgery Center also performs traditional “open” weight loss surgery, depending on the needs of the individual.
For those bringing life into the world, maternal-fetal medicine doctors are on hand to treat women with high-risk pregnancies and coexisting conditions. The hospital offers speciality services including but not limited to: first-trimester screening for Down syndrome, complications like placenta accreta, pregnant women with cancer, neurological disorders and autoimmune diseases, and women carrying infants diagnosed with fetal abnormalities.
NYP offers a smoking cessation program with classes, counseling and medication, including products like nicotine replacement patches. The program is designed to enable patients to quit smoking and add up to eight years to their lives, according to the NYP website. In collaboration with the two medical colleges, the hospital runs clinical trials to study new treatment options for patients. The medical research is run by the colleges but may use the equipment and facilities of New York-Presbyterian.
